Tame diabetes

On 14.11, the birthday of the discoverer of insulin, Frederick Banting, World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year. On this day, the Polish Diabetes Association, among others, tries to talk as much as possible about the disease, which has been called the world's first non-communicable epidemic. Although diabetes cannot be contracted, it is spreading like the pandemic we know so well today. It is affecting more and more people worldwide. The reasons for the increase in certain types of diabetes are not fully known, and the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes is facilitated by unhealthy lifestyles characteristic of the 21st century.

People with diabetes, like patients with other chronic diseases, do not have an easy life in the age of coronavirus. Difficult access to doctors and medical facilities, the need to switch to teleportation, cancelled treatments, a higher risk of death due to diabetes as a so-called co-morbid condition, all this does not inspire optimism. Added to this is the isolation and often being left without one's support group, such an important element in the lives of people with the disease in particular.

The Polish Diabetes Association has been trying to help people with diabetes and their relatives for almost 40 years. The main statutory objective of the organisation is diabetes education, as well as raising public awareness of how serious a disease diabetes is. The association also promotes integration, exchange of experiences and mutual support of people in a similar situation. Traditionally, to mark World Diabetes Day, the association organises a number of smaller and larger educational and inclusive events across the country. However, this year, due to the coronavirus and the restrictions associated with it, it has been forced to move all activities to the media.

To mark this year's World Diabetes Day, a film was produced about living with the disease, featuring contributions from people struggling with diabetes who are also activists in the association. The protagonists show that diabetes must be taken seriously, but on the other hand, it can be lived with.

You are cordially invited to watch the film entitled 'The World of the Future'. 'Tame Diabetes'.
