Is an obese pre-schooler an obese adult?

An obese preschooler is more than four times more likely to be an obese adult than his or her normal-weight peers.

The World Health Organisation WHO reports that children in Poland are gaining weight at the fastest rate in Europe.

The problem of excessive body weight affects 10% young children (1-3 years), 30% children in early childhood, 22% adolescents up to 15 years.

The consequences of obesity in children and adolescents are:

  • problems with concentration and memory, and thus with learning,
  • development of chronic non-communicable diseases, i.e. type II diabetes, cancer, osteoarticular diseases, hypertension,
  • emotional disorders,
  • low self-esteem and self-criticism,
  • social isolation,
  • depression.

The National Health Fund runs a cyclical action "Prevention Wednesday" dedicated to health promotion and disease prevention. On 18 May 2022, the theme for Wednesday is 'Prevention from an early age. Obesity'.

In a prepared video, our experts Dr Katarzyna Rolf from the University of Rzeszów and Dr Marta Niewczas, 6-time World Champion in traditional karate and lecturer at the University of Rzeszów, suggest what can be done to minimise the risk of obesity among children.

The material is available on the channel YouTube - NFZ Academy and on FB NFZ Academy.
