World Diabetes Day was established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Organisation as a response to concerns about the increasing prevalence of diabetes worldwide. The main aim of the campaign is to raise awareness among the general public about the causes, symptoms, treatment and complications of diabetes.
To mark the occasion, we held the Warsaw premiere of the play Sweet Bastard by Jan Jakub Należyte at the Teatr Polski (Chamber Stage) in Warsaw.
The idea for the project came from the Stand Up Together Active Rehabilitation Foundation, which decided to produce a play dedicated to the issues of living with diabetes. "Sweet Bastard" is an educational comedy play that was created for people with diabetes, as well as their loved ones, to support them in their daily struggle with the disease.
This is the story of a world-famous conductor who cannot cope with his illness. At first, he denies the fact that he is chronically ill and disregards his deteriorating health. However, with the support of loved ones and specialists, he manages to return to his health, his work and his passion. The play takes the form of a comedy and will feature Krakow actors - Dariusz Gnatowski, Andrzej Róg, Ewa Romaniak and Agata Woźnicka. The play will be performed mainly in small towns, where diabetics have very limited access to health education.
The Warsaw premiere was co-organised by the Diabetes Coalition. The venue for the event was the Polish Theatre (Kameralna Stage) in Warsaw, which for one evening will become the centre of World Diabetes Day celebrations in Poland. The performance was preceded by a panel discussion on diabetes entitled. "Diabetes 2025" with the participation of diabetologists, representatives of diabetes organisations and government institutions.
