What is oxidative stress?

"Oxidative stress - principles of prevention" was the theme of yesterday's "Wednesday with Prevention" - a cyclical educational action of the National Health Fund.

Oxidative stress - how does it affect our health?

Oxidative stress affects us all. It is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Typical symptoms of oxidative stress include fatigue, headache, concentration problems, decreased immunity, elevated blood levels of LDL cholesterol and low levels of HDL cholesterol.

Oxidative stress underlies many diseases. These include cancer, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, obesity and atherosclerosis.

  • What causes oxidative stress?
  • How do you protect yourself from it?
  • How to increase antioxidant levels in the body?
  • Which diet can reduce oxidative stress?

The beneficial effects of antioxidants on our health and the role of prevention are discussed by Dr Eng. Magdalena Człapka-Matyasik from the Faculty of Food Sciences and Nutrition at Poznań University of Life Sciences.
