Type 2 diabetes prevention - NFZ action - Wednesday with Prevention

14 November is World Diabetes Day

Prevention of type 2 diabetes is the theme of today's "Wednesday with Prevention" - an educational action by the National Health Fund.

Diabetes is a growing health and social problem. In Poland it affects ca. 3 million people, and it is predicted that by 2030, one in ten Poles will be struggling with the disease.

Data from the National Health Fund (NFZ) indicate that 2.86 million adults in Poland had diabetes in 2018 (four-year prevalence recorded on the basis of data on services provided), with this number rising to 3.11 million in 2022. The cost of diabetes services, medical devices and medicines was approximately PLN 2.5 billion in 2022 (1.9 billion in 2018).

Approximately 9 per cent of Poles have type 2 diabetes, and a second number of us suffer from metabolic conditions preceding the onset of the disease:

- insulin resistance

- hyperinsulinemia

- obesity

- metabolic syndrome.

Prevention

Prevention of the development of diabetic complications involves many measures aimed at reducing the harmful effects of the disease on the human body. An important element in the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes is a balanced diet and physical activity, as well as regular preventive examinations.
