Sepsis is the world's 3rd-4th cause of death, in the US it accounts for a mortality rate greater than the cumulative number of
deaths of the 3 most common cancers combined. Most cases of sepsis develop outside the hospital and 40%
patients are children < 5 years of age. We do not have data on incidence, treatment outcomes, costs
direct and distant sepsis in Poland. Despite the fact that all therapies required by sepsis patients are
reimbursed there are systemic barriers - poor diagnostics in pre-hospital and in-hospital settings
Emergency Departments (ED) and the frequent failure to initiate antibiotic therapy in the ED, delays access to
effective treatment. - Konstanty Szułdrzyński, MD, PhD, National Medical Institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration.
