Psoriasis is a non-infectious, chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disease that affects approximately 2-3% of the world's population. It manifests with characteristic skin lesions, usually in the form of red, scaly patches that can appear on various parts of the body, including the scalp, elbows, knees and lower back. The disease is often associated with feelings of itching and discomfort, and in some cases can cause psoriatic arthritis, which affects the patient's mobility and dexterity.
Psoriasis varies from mild skin lesions to severe cases with widespread, painful patches on the skin, such as generalised pustular psoriasis (GPP). Although it cannot be completely cured, there are a number of modern therapies available to effectively manage symptoms and improve patients' quality of life.
