Prevention on the scale of life - a patient's guide

Annually, as many as 20,000 women find out about it. It has no symptoms in the early stages and, if detected early, is curable. Breast cancer - how to prevent it effectively?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, celebrated by international health-promoting organisations since 1985. The National Health Fund has prepared a guide highlighting the importance of prevention and regular check-ups.

Prevention on the scale of life

Breast cancer is a malignant tumour arising from cells of the breast gland. It develops locally and can metastasise to lymph nodes and internal organs. The highest incidence is among women over 50 years of age.

Unfortunately, breast cancer is still detected too late. In only 20 per cent of cases is the disease diagnosed at an early stage, when the chances of a cure are still very high - underlines Ewa Maciejewska, president of the Lodz Amazon Club Association.

What symptoms should worry you, how to perform a self-examination correctly, where to go for a free mammogram?
