Taking multiple medications at the same time without specialist supervision increases the risk of interactions and dangerous complications.
"Poly-pragmasy. Taking medicines safely" This is the theme of today's "Wednesday with Prevention" - an educational campaign by the National Health Fund.
What is polypragmasy and can it affect you or your loved ones?
When we talk about polygamy
Polypragmasy, also known as multidrug use, is the taking of five or more drugs at the same time. It is dangerous for everyone, especially elderly people burdened by chronic diseases, e.g. diabetes, hypertension, circulatory failure.
Taking multiple medicines can take the form of adverse polypragmasy, a phenomenon where medicines are taken inappropriately or irrationally.
An informed patient - effective therapy
If you are taking several medicines at the same time and want to find out whether you are doing so safely, listen to the expert in the 'Wednesday with Prevention' video. Dr Honorata Blaszczyk, a specialist in family medicine, urges us to think before buying another medicine and check whether we really need it. It is also worthwhile for seniors in particular to review their medication at least once every six months.
