Laboratory diagnosticians have made a video. They show who they are

Laboratory diagnosticians, normally invisible to patients, show that they are. In a video promoting their profession, they talk about what their job is and their place in the healthcare system.

What we can learn from the video [prepared by the National Trade Union of Employees of Medical Diagnostic Laboratories? That 70 per cent of medical decisions depend on laboratory results prepared by diagnosticians. That without them virtually no hospital could function. And contrary to what many people may think, diagnosticians in healthcare did not appear with the coronavirus pandemic, and their work is not limited to confirming the presence of a dangerous virus in samples. In practice, this is a fraction of their professional activity.

For practically every disease and every patient, it is on the basis of their analyses that the correct diagnosis is made and therapy selected. The educational path of a laboratory diagnostician is just as difficult and time-consuming as that of a doctor. Like them, diagnosticians undertake specialisation training in 13 areas of laboratory medicine after five years of study.

Ultimately, it is the 16 000 laboratory diagnosticians who are responsible for the laboratory tests of 38 million Poles.
