Attention: the premiere! In the special issue, Medexpress presents a spot for the #uDarujżycie campaign, featuring prominent neurologists Prof. Bartosz Karaszewski, MD, Bozena Adamkiewicz, MD, and Michal Karlinski, MD, PhD.
The statistics are unrelenting. Every day 220 people living in Poland suffer a stroke, and only 14 per cent of them are treated with thrombolytic therapy, i.e. effectively. Every 6-8 minutes someone suffers a stroke, which is considered the third cause of death in Poland and the main reason for disability in people over 40. Stroke can happen to anyone, during any daily activity. It is a myth that it only affects seniors. The fight against stroke has to start even before it occurs. How? Arm yourself with the necessary knowledge on how to react when the first symptoms appear. After all, the fight against stroke is a race against time. By acting quickly and rationally, we can save someone's life or...ourselves. The right action in such a situation will prove to be the most precious gift. Action #uDAR draws attention in particular to the need to take action if we recognise alarming stroke symptoms in a loved one, a passer-by or ourselves, such as slurred speech, drooping mouth corners (facial asymmetry), sudden dizziness and severe headache, visual disturbances, loss of limb power. The spot promoting the actions featured: Prof. Dr. med. Bartosz Karaszewski, a Ministry of Health expert on stroke, head of the Department of Neurology at the Medical University of Gdańsk, Bozena Adamkiewicz, MD from the M. Kopernik High-Speciality Centre for Oncology and Traumatology in Łódź, the provincial consultant for neurology and Michał Karlinski, MD, PhD, 2nd Neurology Clinic of the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology in Warsaw.
Why only immediate intervention can help #uDar life ?
The treatment of a stroke plays out in the first hours of its onset. If a patient arrives at the hospital within three hours of the onset of neurological symptoms, the chance of them leaving the hospital fit is as high as 70%. If he or she arrives there at the end of the so-called therapeutic window, i.e. around the sixth hour, the chances of remaining fit drop to 35%. It is important that intravenous thrombolytic treatment is started as soon as possible, but no later than 4.5 hours after the first symptoms appear. Mechanical thrombectomy, which involves removing the clot from the lumen of a cerebral vessel, is only possible if a large intracranial vessel is occluded.
#uDon't wait! Even during a pandemic!
