The Avalon Foundation, one of the largest non-governmental organisations supporting people with disabilities, has presented a comprehensive research report entitled 'Sexuality parenting of people with mobility disabilities'. The study was conducted within the framework of the Sexon project, by SW RESEARCH. The published report is a response to the widespread belief that sexuality and parenting do not apply to people with disabilities, and the presented research results dispel myths relating to the intimate lives of more than 3 million Poles with disabilities. 800 people took part in the survey.
The research conducted showed the extent of the problem regarding the perception of OzN sexuality. One in three respondents experienced negative comments relating to sexuality (36%). People with congenital disabilities and women were more likely to encounter such statements. The most frequent negative comments were made by family members (44%) and friends (37%). "The research has shown us that the social acceptance of disability that we as a Foundation strive for with our actions is extremely important. A huge role in the acceptance of oneself and one's sexuality is played by one's immediate environment, especially family and friends. Disability should not determine how an individual is perceived in any sphere." - comments Łukasz Wielgosz, board member of the Avalon Foundation.
