The development of allergic diseases and the worsening air quality in Poland, combined with a western lifestyle, have resulted in a rapidly growing number of asthma sufferers. How widespread is this disease, how is it diagnosed, and how is it treated? These questions will be answered during the editorial series 'Week with Asthma'.
Experts are in no doubt: asthma is a disease that already has a social dimension. Epidemiological data from Europe indicate that up to 4 million people in our country may be suffering from chronic inflammation of the lower respiratory tract against an allergic background. In contrast, data from the National Health Fund (from 2019) indicate that the number of patients diagnosed with asthma reaches 2.17 million people - of which 1.4 million patients are adults and 664 000 are children and adolescents. What does this mean? According to the experts, the difference in the presented data indicates that we have a large population of sick patients in Poland who have not been diagnosed and treated.
