Blood, despite advances in medicine and technology, cannot be produced. The only source is a healthy human being. Honorary blood donor.
Why is it worth helping? Why is it worth sharing the gift of life? How to prepare for donation - this is discussed as part of today's "Wednesdays with Prevention" - an educational action by the National Health Fund.
Your blood can save lives
Blood is needed all year round. It is especially needed by accident victims, haematology patients, oncology patients and patients undergoing surgery.
On average, 1 in 10 people treated in hospital needs blood. For heart surgery 6 units of blood are needed, for accident victims 10 units. A cancer patient needs 8 x 450 ml per week*.
Blood cannot be produced, but it can be shared.
Blood of type O Rh- can be transfused to anyone in need. Blood loss after donation is regenerated by the body within 4 weeks. As many as 3 lives can be saved with a single donation.
About who can become a blood donor? How to prepare for donation? What to include and what to exclude in our diet? How to behave after donating blood? What entitlements do blood donors have? - we have prepared educational materials "Wednesday with Prevention".
