Acromegaly is a characteristic disease that significantly alters the patient's external appearance. However, it is not the bodily changes that are most serious, but the other serious systemic complications that the disease causes. The patient's emotional and psychological state also requires attention, and the patient needs adequate support from a psychiatrist and psychologist. In order to significantly improve the quality of life of a person with acromegaly, it is important to individualise treatment and care.
The educational portal akromegalia.edu.pl is addressed to people with acromegaly and their immediate environment, family, friends. Our goal is to increase public awareness of acromegaly and to draw attention to the problems of people living with this disease. Educational materials specially prepared by experts, i.e. an endocrinologist, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a dietician, a physiotherapist - are to provide knowledge on diagnosis, treatment, but mainly on how to cope with the difficulties of everyday life. - says Igor Grzesiak, Vice President of the Board of Directors at the Institute for Patients' Rights and Health Education, initiated the creation of an educational portal for patients with acromegaly.
On the website, patients will find information prepared by a psychiatrist and a psychologist on the quality of life with acromegaly, as well as advice on accepting and adapting to the disease, coping with emotional difficulties, symptoms indicative of depression requiring support from a specialist. The physiotherapist explains why active exercise and rehabilitation adapted to the patient's capabilities are very important in the whole therapeutic process of a person with acromegaly and what benefits they bring to the patient. The dietician's advice concerns dietary recommendations, nutritional status, the use of an appropriate diet affecting the patient's health and comfort in living with the disease. Endocrinologists, on the other hand, explain issues concerning acromegaly, its symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and carbohydrate metabolism disorders, which are very characteristic of this condition. The portal will be continuously updated and supplemented with new material.
