FLESH AND BLOOD GAUCHER CAMPAIGN

Poland's first information campaign on Gaucher's disease, which can affect around three per cent of patients with undiagnosed blood diseases, is being launched. The campaign is being implemented in collaboration with Sanofi Genzyme and its honorary partner is the Polish Society of Haematologists and Transfusiologists.

There are approximately 80 people living with a diagnosis of Gaucher disease in Poland. They are people of all ages, active members of society who pursue their passions and achieve professional success. Ordinary people, flesh and blood, affected by an extraordinary disease full of contradictions. Although much more is known about Gaucher's disease than was known 30 years ago, those affected still have some milestones to reach along the way, which are still a challenge.

Also part of the flesh-and-blood Gaucher campaign is the Steps ahead of Gaucher campaign, which takes place during October - the month of building awareness of Gaucher's disease. Its symbol is the green laces that adorn the shoes of athletes during this special time. The initiative breaks the stereotypes that the genetic disease can bring to mind. People affected by Gaucher's disease can be active in their families, their jobs and also in sport thanks to the treatment available.

Work is currently underway to finalise Poland's first guidebook for patients with Gaucher disease. The booklet will be arranged in the rhythm of the 26 administrations of the therapy per year that is available to Polish patients. Each administration of the drug, which takes place in the hospital, will be linked to a specific topic about Gaucher disease. The handbook will also include inspirational texts to mobilise patients for an active life. The patient will receive the booklet from his or her attending physician.
