THYROID GLAND: ROLE, SYMPTOMS, DISEASES

Thyroid diseases are among the most prevalent diseases worldwide. In Poland, about 22% people suffer from diseases of the thyroid gland, or have suffered from them in the past. Statistically, women are affected 9 times more often than men, yet the thyroid gland is responsible for the metabolism of the entire body, which is particularly important for them.

Symptoms of thyroid disease may result from thyroid dysfunction (hyper- or hypothyroidism), enlargement of the gland - goitre (usually with nodular remodelling - benign nodular goitre or thyroid tumours), and may also result from thyroid inflammation (e.g. Hashimoto's disease). Although patients notice many, often worrying symptoms, they downplay them and forgo visiting their doctor. They also often fail to read the signals that our body sends out. This is why a large number of people live with an undiagnosed disease that insidiously destroys their body.

"Thyroid diseases, if detected early, make it possible to start the appropriate treatment process, as well as to limit the dangerous complications of the patients' health. Rapid weight loss, weight gain, sluggishness, hyperactivity, weakness or difficulty concentrating are some of the symptoms that are often underestimated, yet characteristic of hypothyroidism. With hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, we are often accompanied by a feeling of heat, increased sweating (the skin becomes warm and moist), shortness of breath and palpitations or trembling hands. Of course, one condition and the other can coexist, which is why it is important to see a specialist." - emphasises Prof. Dr. Ireneusz Nawrot, Secretary of the Polish Club of Endocrine Surgery.
