Depression: health without taboos

Not every lowered mood is indicative of it. Often the first symptoms of depression go unnoticed, not only by relatives but even by the patients themselves.

According to World Health Organisation estimates, depression will be the most prevalent disease in the world by 2030. It is therefore important to raise public awareness of depression and support for those struggling with the problem.

Symptoms to note

Depression is not a temporary lowering of mood. It is an illness that makes it very difficult to function in many spheres of life, such as work or relationships with other people. It is a source of suffering for those who experience it. It can happen to anyone, regardless of age or gender, so it is important to know how to recognise it and how to prevent it.

What symptoms and behaviours should cause concern?

The first symptoms of depression often go unnoticed. These include sadness that accompanies almost every day for most of the day; lack of interest in carrying out daily activities; feelings of fatigue and sleep disturbances; difficulty concentrating; feelings of guilt; low self-confidence; thoughts of death, suicide.

Do not ignore these symptoms. Untreated depression can get worse. Early diagnosis gives you a better chance of lasting recovery.
